EU Travel & Tourism Sector Critical to EU Economic Recovery

London, United Kingdom, April 9, 2020 / travelindex.com / Sector shows significant growth compared to overall economy. A major new report has revealed Travel & Tourism’s crucial contribution to help re-energise the EU’s economic recovery once the COVID-19 pandemic has been successfully combatted.

The publication by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, of its annual Economic Impact Report (EIR), shows the vital part the sector played in driving the EU economy last year.

During 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for 22.6 million jobs, or 11.2% of the EU’s total workforce. It also generated 1,319 billion Euro’s GDP, or 9.5% to the EU economy. Whilst the EU’s overall economy grew by just 1.4%, the Travel & Tourism sector showed significant growth of 2.3% on the previous year.

The comprehensive report also showed the EU is the largest region in the world in terms of international spending at a staggering 427 billion Euros in 2019, representing 6.2% of the EU’s total exports.

Leisure spending helped generate jobs throughout the EU with analysis from the report showing across the EU it accounted for an overwhelming 81% of all cash spent, compared to less than a fifth (19%) for business.

The largest EU economies in terms of total Travel & Tourism contribution to GDP were also revealed to be Germany (US$347 billion), Italy (US$260 billion), France (US$229 billion) and Spain (US$198 billion).

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “WTTC’s 2019 Economic Impact Report (EIR) shows how intrinsic the Travel & Tourism sector was last year to the EU economy, responsible for more than 22 million jobs or 11.2% of the total number of people employed.

“Our analysis underscores how vital the Travel & Tourism sector will be in powering the recovery of the EU economy, generating new jobs and driving visitors back, having a positive economic domino effect on suppliers large and small throughout the industry on the continent.

“Until then it is crucial that all governments throughout the EU help to protect a sector which is the backbone of the European and global economy, which is currently in a fight for survival with up to 75 million jobs globally are at immediate risk, with 6.4 million at risk across the EU alone.”

On a global level, the Travel & Tourism sector outperformed the 2.5% rate of global GDP growth for the ninth consecutive year in a row, thanks to an annual GDP growth rate of 3.5%.

This made it the global economy’s third highest sector in terms of GDP growth. The EIR shows the sector supporting 1 in 10 jobs (330 million), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating 1 in 4 of all new jobs.

A breakdown by WTTC shows the Asia Pacific to be the top performing region worldwide with an impressive growth rate of 5.5%, followed very closely by the Middle East at 5.3%. The US demonstrated a steady growth rate of 3.4% and the EU 2.4%, while the fastest growing country was Saudi Arabia.

UNWTO: Stay home today, TravelTomorrow

UNWTO: Stay home today, TravelTomorrow

Madrid, Spain, April 7, 2020 / travelindex.com / By staying home today, we can travel tomorrow”.The hashtag #TravelTomorrow encapsulates this message of solidarity and hope, through whichthe World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) calls for shared responsibility among travellers and the tourism sector around the world to deal with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Discovering different cultures, practicing solidarity and respect, caring for the environment, continuing to learn, fostering decent work, development and sustainability, generating new opportunities for all. These are the core values of tourism advocated by the World Tourism Organization and which constitute the main pillars of the #TravelTomorrow campaign.

#TravelTomorrow has become the common thread that runs through the World Tourism Organization’s response to thecurrent crisis, highlighting the enduring values of tourism.

Our response must be fast, coherent and united so that we can all travel again.

This online campaign has had a massive impact on social networks and is being embraced by a growing number of countries, destinations and companies linked to tourism, cities, media outlets and individuals from all over the world. Countries such as Germany, Morocco, Mongolia, Oman and Uruguay, as well as cities such as Bogotá or Vienna, have already endorsed the hashtag #TravelTomorrow, thus amplifying the voice of tourism, which is united in the face of this unprecedented global challenge.

A digital resource platform has been created to provide different options for any individual, business or institutional user to join this initiative, offering elements such as images for social media profiles, electronic signatures, as well as relevant audio-visual content on tourism and COVID-19, all available here.

“Historically, tourism has proven itself as a key driver of international recovery, and as early as now, we must begin to prepare in order to build the foundations of the future resilience of tourism,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

Crisis Committee

The Global Tourism Crisis Committee, chaired by the UNWTO, has also supported this initiative within the framework of the recommendations it has developed to address this crisis. “Our response must be fast, coherent and united so that we can all travel again soon and do so in a safer, more sustainable and more respectful way, learning from the lessons of the current crisis,” concluded Pololikashivili.

Among the recommendations promoted by the Committee is the need for financial and political support for recovery measures aimed at the tourism sector, in coordination with international development organizations, in order to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on employment, protect the most vulnerable segments of society and accelerate recovery.

At the same time, it is important for policies and actions to ensure the promotion of sustainable development, in line with the mandate of the UNWTO, especially at the beginning of the Decade of Action—ten years to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals deriving from the 2030 Agenda.

Los Cabos Unveils Coronavirus Strategies

Los Cabos Unveils Coronavirus Strategies

Los Cabos, Mexico, April 7, 2020 / travelindex.com / The Los Cabos Tourism Board has created an online toolkit for its tourism partners. Los Cabos has taken a proactive stance on the coronavirus, implementing containment measures through all sectors of its tourism industry, said Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “Our No. 1 priority is to keep the community and visitors safe.”

Several weeks ago, screening procedures were implemented at the San José International Airport, including containment measures for travelers with high temperatures or other symptoms of the virus. Arriving passengers are required to fill out a questionnaire, which, among others things, asks them to divulge where they have traveled in the past 14 days.

Currently, there are 40 flights to Los Cabos from the U.S. and Canada, Esponda said.

The Ministry of Health of Baja California Sur has put into place a protocol with the hotel and timeshare association, business chamber of commerce and destination management companies to assess and report potential risks or cases.

“We’ve also implemented cleaning protocols [at restaurants and hotels],” Esponda said. “Restaurants are limiting the number of guests and are putting more distance between tables.”

Although visitors numbers have dropped dramatically in the aftermath of the U.S. government’s restrictions on non-essential travel across the U.S.-Mexican border, “there has been a commitment from the private sector to keep hotels open,” Esponda said, adding that virtually the entire Los Cabos population is reliant on the tourism industry, and that the destination is committed to keeping people employed. “Our most important asset is our people.”

Meanwhile, travelers are, in fact, still traveling to Los Cabos, albeit in much smaller numbers. “We have a different dynamic than other destinations,” Esponda said. “There are many Americans who own homes in the destination [and] arrive by private plane” and also stay in hotels.

In other developments, the Los Cabos Tourism Board has created an information campaign for its tourism partners, including consortia, travel advisors and tour operators, to keep them abreast of the latest developments regarding the destination.

An online toolkit designed provides Los Cabos’ partners with information. It is updated daily, with real-time reports

The tourism board has also assembled a team of experts who are able to communicate the latest information on the coronavirus and how it relates to Los Cabos.

Koh Lanta, Iconic Thai Resort Finds Positives Under Pressure

Koh Lanta, Thailand, April 6, 2020 / travelindex.com / Pioneering luxury Thai resort, Pimalai Resort & Spa is forging ahead with recovery plans despite the recent closure of Koh Lanta island in the southern Thai province of Krabi until April 30.

These are not easy times across the world and certainly for a hospitality industry in Thailand blessed with booming inbound arrivals from across the world for the past decade. But for Pimalai, the key is to stay positive, take care of the team and use this time to create new horizons a property which opened almost 20 years ago. It is something very much in Pimalai’s DNA.

“The vision of Pimalai has always been far sighted,” said Pimalai Resort & Spa general manager, Patrice Landrein, a seasoned hotelier whose former employers include The Savoy in London and the Ritz in Paris. “It is for this reason we do not panic, but think carefully, take care of our people and consider the future.”

“When we first opened a lot of people thought we were a little mad to be honest given the former remoteness of the destination. But look how the world has changed. We came here to create a private, service-driven, nature-inspired experience. This is now more relevant than ever before – and we will continue to move forward with our philosophy and prepare for guests when they travel again,” he added.

Pimalai has started full renovations of 20 of its hillside ocean-view villas with private pools that sit at the top of soaring indigenous Ton Yang trees that are as high as 80-metres tall from the ground up and over 100 years old. The design concept is by Thailand’s P49 and offers bright, modern interiors inspired by marine colours, contours and movement. The resort is also conceptualising the first wedding chapel on the island with appointed designers Habita, whose work includes projects for Six Senses and Soneva, set to confirm designs next month.

To continue to connect with customers and inspire future travel, Pimalai has launched online yoga classes for guests at home to keep in shape and in touch, given by Heart, the yoga master featured the resort’s annual yoga festival, Zynergy. These online classes take place three to four times per week and can be founded on Heart’s Instagram channel (@heartmaher).

Staff training has increased in all departments with regular English classes, folk-design tutorials for unique decorations across the resort and music performance teaching to maintain spirits as well as minds. The resort continues to provide three meals a day for staff, despite the temporary closure of the resort.

A full deep-cleaning and maintenance programme is in progress across all 300 rai (120 acres) of the resort including accommodation, public areas, restaurants, spa and gardens. Alternative energy programmes, composting and organic growing are all in full swing.

Just before closing, Pimalai’s Trip Advisor rating was number one and guest satisfaction reports were strong, a key reason why the resort remains confident of a quick bounce back.

“The loyalty of our guests and the comments we have been receiving has been nothing but outstanding. It has been a true inspiration and encouraged us to make sure the resort is better than ever for when they return,” said Mr. Landrein. “Like all in the hospitality industry we are under pressure due to our temporary closure, but we are positive and we will come back strong. We are Pimalai.”

About Pimalai Resort & Spa

IATA Postpones 2020 AGM

IATA Postpones 2020 AGM

Geneva, Switzerland, April 6,2020 / travelindex.com / The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced the postponement of the 76th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit. The event had been scheduled to take place on 22-23 June in Amsterdam.

The 76th IATA AGM and World Air Transport Summit will be held when it is both safe and practicable to do so. IATA anticipates that will be in the late third or early fourth quarter of 2020. An announcement will be made when a date is confirmed.

“Our members are in the deepest crisis the air transport industry has ever faced. With much of the passenger business grounded as part of the global fight to contain the virus, many airlines are in a struggle to remain viable. On the cargo side, airlines are doing whatever they can to keep global supply chains moving with vital shipments, including those for critical medical supplies. We will come together as an industry when the freedom to travel has been restored and we can focus on air transport’s critical role in driving the economic and social recovery from this unprecedented crisis,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

IBM Helps Bring Supercomputers Into Global Fight Against Covid-19

IBM Helps Bring Supercomputers Into Global Fight Against Covid-19

Armonk, New York, United States, April 4, 2020 /travelindex.com/ by Dario Gil, Director of IBM Research – At IBM, I have the privilege of working with colleagues who have dedicated their lives and careers to advancing science and creating innovative technology that can be a force for progress in the world. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic we have been working closely with governments in the U.S. and worldwide to find all available options to put our technology and expertise to work to help organizations be resilient and adapt to the consequences of the pandemic, and to accelerate the process of discovery and enable the scientific and medical community to develop treatments and ultimately a cure.

Now, in collaboration with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the U.S. Department of Energy and many others, IBM is helping launch the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium, which will bring forth an unprecedented amount of computing power—16 systems with more than 330 petaflops, 775,000 CPU cores, 34,000 GPUs, and counting — to help researchers everywhere better understand COVID-19, its treatments and potential cures.

How can supercomputers help us fight this virus? These high-performance computing systems allow researchers to run very large numbers of calculations in epidemiology, bioinformatics, and molecular modeling. These experiments would take years to complete if worked by hand, or months if handled on slower, traditional computing platforms.

By pooling the supercomputing capacity under a consortium of partners, including IBM, Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL), Argonne National Lab (ANL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and multiple leading technology companies, we can offer extraordinary supercomputing power to scientists, medical researchers and government agencies as they respond to and mitigate this global emergency.

As a powerful example of the potential, IBM’s Summit, the most powerful supercomputer on the planet, has already enabled researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee to screen 8,000 compounds to find those that are most likely to bind to the main “spike” protein of the coronavirus, rendering it unable to infect host cells. They were able to recommend the 77 promising small-molecule drug compounds that could now be experimentally tested. This is the power of accelerating discovery through computation.

Now we must scale, and IBM will work with our consortium partners to evaluate proposals from researchers around the world and provide access to this supercomputing capacity for the projects that can have the most immediate impact.

I am proud to be working with my IBM colleagues and the extended scientific community to help kick-start this effort. What began just days ago with one conversation with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has solidified quickly into an unprecedented effort that can make a real difference. In a time of uncertainty, I want to offer this promise: IBM will continue to explore everything in our power to use our technology and expertise to drive meaningful progress in this global fight.

PATA CEO, Interconnectedness Has Made Us Grow and Strong

PATA CEO, Interconnectedness Has Made Us Grow and Strong

Bangkok (Thailand), April 3, 2020 /travelindex.com/ It is unprecedented in our lives to experience such uncertainty and vulnerability as a society, and never before has our industry been impacted so heavily and so comprehensively. Clearly this global crisis will change us and what we do. While I am no more qualified than the next to predict what this will mean to our future and the future of travel and tourism, what I would like to convey is that it is our interconnectedness as an industry that has made us grow and kept us strong for so long. It is these connections that will help us emerge from this together. With this in mind, I hope our PATA community is of value to you in these challenging times.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some updates concerning the Association, and some initiatives we are taking to help you during the current COVID-19 crisis on our industry.

Due to the postponement of the 69th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the PATA Annual Summit 2020 in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, the PATA Board has confirmed the extension of PATA Officers and the PATA Executive Board to a re-scheduled 69th AGM at the currently scheduled Leshan Board meetings from September 3-6, 2020. The PATA Board has also confirmed that the term of elected PATA Officers will be extended for a total 18-month period from September 2020 to May 2022. For those of you currently nominated for Officer or Executive Board positions in the recent call for elections, “Kay” – Kornchalee Tantimongkonsakul will soon be in contact to confirm your availability to stand for this altered time period. Thank you to those that are willing to commit your time and energy to the Association. We are also committed to the re-organisation of PATA to strengthen the performance and outcomes of the Association into the future, and we will present bylaw changes at the September meeting. PATA will send the notice of the rescheduled AGM 45 days in advance to PATA members.

Please note that if we are unable to hold the meetings in Leshan. we will then organise the AGM online through the Zoom meeting platform software. In addition, we are also looking at alternative solutions regarding the organisation of PATA Travel Mart 2020. Of course, we all hope that conditions will improve, and we will be able to hold the event as planned.

Furthermore, you may have also seen the recent announcement regarding of the newly launched PATA Crisis Resource Center and Tourism Recovery Monitor. This collaborative effort amongst our members and partners is designed to collate reliable data and information to assist all industry stakeholders as they deal with the current crisis. These websites accumulate knowledge, generate support, and help members and industry stakeholders across the globe access solutions by governments, while also assisting governments in understanding the challenges through the travel impact survey. This initiative is a result of pilot Expert Task Forces (ETFs) that are a core component of our new organizational model. I would like to thank our experts that contributed to these initiatives.

I wanted to also take this opportunity to inform you that the Executive Board has made the decision to extend Dr. Mario Hardy’s CEO’s contract to May 31st, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of everyone at PATA, I would like to thank Mario for agreeing to the extension of his term and for providing steady, on-going leadership to the Association. We will begin searching for a new CEO in September 2020.

Finally, we are also pleased to confirm that the re-scheduled PATA Annual Summit in Ras Al Khaimah will be held on March 23-26, 2021. We want to convey our appreciation to the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority for their commitment and support.

This time is tough for many of us across the sector. Therefore, I encourage all of you to reach out and check in with each other in our PATA community. It’s an important time to do this. It’s caring for each other’s well-being and sense of community amongst us that makes PATA special.
