African Destinations Meet to Plan Sustainable Future for Tourism

African Destinations Meet to Plan Sustainable Future for Tourism

Madrid, Spain, June 10, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / Recovery and resilience were the central themes as the members of the World Tourism Organization’s Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) met for the 63rd time. Reflecting the extraordinary circumstances, the meeting was held virtually, bringing together Ministers of Tourism from across the region with representatives of the African Union, the West African Monetary Union and from the private sector, to plot a united course towards a stronger and better tourism sector.

Held as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) leads the global restart of tourism, the meeting enjoyed the virtual presence of 140 participants from 30 countries, including 24 Ministers of Tourism. They were joined by representatives of 10 international organizations and by members of the UNWTO Affiliate Members network.
Priorities to unlock Africa’s tourism potential

As well as addressing the immediate challenge posed by COVID-19, discussions also focused on the key areas of UNWTO’s Agenda for Africa, a roadmap designed to guide the sector in sustainable growth up to 2030. These priorities include enhancing Africa’s tourism Infrastructure, boosting air connectivity, easing visa facilitation, ensuring the safety and security of tourists, investing in the development of human capital development, and improving the image of Africa to the rest of the world.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Africa’s tourism potential is undeniable, as is the potential of tourism to drive inclusive development across the continent. The steady easing of travel restrictions, first within nations and then across international borders, will allow the many social and economic benefits of tourism to return. If tourism’s restart is managed in a responsible and coordinated manner, harnessing the power of innovation and entrepreneurship, then it can transform millions of lives and help protect and preserve Africa’s rich cultural and natural heritage.”

If tourism’s restart is managed in a responsible and coordinated manner, harnessing the power of innovation and entrepreneurship, then it can transform millions of lives and help protect and preserve Africa’s rich cultural and natural heritage

Realigning the Agenda for Africa

Joining Mr Pololikashvili for the 63rd meeting of the CAF was the group’s current chairman Roland Chitotela, who also serves as Minister of Tourism and Arts, Zambia, and the African Union was represented by its Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid. All participants welcomed the latest initiatives designed at growing African tourism announced by the Secretary-General, including the Brand Africa marketing competition and a fresh emphasis on showcasing African gastronomy and using this as a new market for sustainable tourism and job creation.

In the run-up to the meeting, UNWTO’s Member States took part in an online survey through which they were invited to share their thoughts on how the UNWTO Agenda for Africa can be utilized to accelerate recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and build resilience for the future. Participants expressed a strong desire to see the top five key areas of the Agenda for Africa prioritized in order to support swift and sustainable recovery. These priorities are: unlocking growth through investment and through effective public-private partnerships; promoting innovation and technology; visa facilitation and enhanced connectivity; advocating for Brand Africa, and fostering greater resilience, including through enhanced safety and security for tourists.

Aman to Open Luxury Resort in Kyoto

Aman to Open Luxury Resort in Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan, June 9, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / Aman has signed a deal with Kyoto Resorts, a subsidiary of the Chartered Group, to manage a luxurious new property in Kyoto, Japan, Aman’s third resort in Japan. Scheduled to open 1 November 2019, the Aman Kyoto is situated in a hidden garden close to Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion).

The resort, with 24 rooms and two two-bedroom villas, draws on the country’s ryokan (traditional inn) and onsen (hot spring) concepts to provide an authentic yet contemporary Kyoto sanctuary surrounded by nature.

Unlocking the secrets of Japan’s ancient Imperial capital, Aman Kyoto and its secret garden are just a stone’s throw from the city’s 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, yet feel a world away.

The 80-acre Aman Kyoto site comprises 72 acres of permanent forest and eight acres of exquisite gardens lovingly tended over many decades by the previous owner of the site, who was one of Japan’s most respected collectors of the obi (the ornamental sash for a traditional Japanese kimono). His unrealised aim was to house his collection in a textile museum to be built within the garden. Aman is honoured to be the garden’s next custodian, giving it a fresh lease of life and protecting its fragile grounds for decades to come.

The garden is formed as a series of manicured platforms, impeccably kept through the years, within a hidden valley, enclosed on one side by a small stream, and on another by a wooded hill. An ethereal landscape of mature trees, which change colour through the year, transports the garden from one season to another. The platforms, originally intended as locations for the buildings of the museum, now provide the foundations for the sensitively designed pavilions of the resort.

Moss-covered stone pathways laid down by the creator of the garden, some edged in massive cut-stone borders, traverse the site. Graceful garden stairways and pathways lead guests to the upper platforms, and are bordered with colourful yama momiji maples and kitayama-sugi (Japanese cedar) planted in avenues. The garden is cleverly designed to self-irrigate through the collection of rainwater via the site’s numerous hidden caves and water tunnels.

Within the formal lawn in the centre of the site, large granite boulders, originally selected as sculptures by the former owner, define and hold court over the space. The tranquility and drama of this setting, magnified by the breeze in the trees, has inspired the respectful architectural design of Aman Kyoto.

Exemplary in its simplicity, the resort is an architectural masterpiece brought into being by Kerry Hill Architects, who designed both Aman Tokyo and Amanemu.

Consisting of a series of standalone pavilions, each with a distinct function, Aman Kyoto includes separate Arrival, Living, Dining and Spa Pavilions, four Guest Pavilions housing 24 guest rooms offering leafy seclusion with garden-or-stream views, and two separate Pavilions overlooking the forest canopy housing a pair of two-bedroom villas of unparalleled luxury.

Each of Aman Kyoto’s 24 guest rooms and two villas is a contemporary reimagining of the traditional ryokan. Strikingly minimalist in their design, the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows framing the spectacular natural surroundings, tatami mats covering the floors, and tokonoma (alcoves where items for artistic appreciation are presented) providing a subtle focal point. The interiors are spacious and light-filled – ingeniously crafted to foster peace, relaxation and contemplation.

The colour palette for interiors is neutral, complementing the work of local artisans: handmade raku tile panels grace the Living Pavilion and custom-made ceramic tiles decorate the restaurant. The ofuro bathtubs in each guest room are made of hinoki cypress wood, native to central Japan. All furniture pieces, including traditional Japanese lanterns, have been custom-designed and are exclusive to Aman Kyoto. Carefully selected artefacts, whether vases, artworks or antiques, have been individually selected for each space, celebrating the refined aesthetic and creative values of Japan.

Aman Kyoto’s signature restaurant in the Dining Pavilion will be a landmark addition to one of Japan’s most celebrated gastronomical regions. Showcasing Japanese haute cuisine, multicourse dining experiences will make use of the finest hand-picked local produce.

The convivial Living Pavilion with its central fireplace and glass doors opening onto the zen (ornate stone garden) will be no less inspired. Home-cooked Kyoto obanzai-style cuisine will be served throughout the day, and guests can also enjoy afternoon tea and reserve bamboo picnic hampers to be enjoyed al-fresco in the garden or forest glades. The garden itself is ideal for outdoor events, from small private dinners and functions, to weddings, yoga and mindfulness sessions.

The natural spring water that flows near Aman Kyoto is central to the philosophy at the resort’s Aman Spa, and something of a rarity in the region. Traditional onsen bathing facilities, using the water from a local spring, deliver relaxation and healing in their purest forms, while a range of treatments tap into Japan’s plentiful natural apothecary – including Kyoto green tea, Tanba kuromame (black beans), local saké, and cold-pressed tsubaki (camellia) oil.

WTTC: Nearly 3 million UK Travel and Tourism Jobs Could be Lost

WTTC: Nearly 3 million UK Travel and Tourism Jobs Could be Lost

London, United Kingdom, June 9, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / Nearly three million jobs could be lost in the UK Travel & Tourism sector if barriers to global travel, such as quarantine measures and blanket anti-travel advisories remain in place, according to new research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

  • Up to 2.9 million jobs are at risk in the UK Travel & Tourism sector alone
  • Prolonged travel restrictions could result in the loss of $186bn to UK GDP
  • 1.7m jobs could be saved if restrictions are removed in June
  • Worst-case scenario can be avoided if UK follows four-point plan for recovery

The devastating figure comes from WTTC economic modelling, which looks at the impact faced by the Travel & Tourism sector amid local and global travel restrictions as a result of COVID-19.

In the worst-case scenario, where restrictions were lifted after the summer, the impact would be more significant, putting a total of 2.9 million jobs at risk. This represents an alarming 142 per cent rise from the most recent 1.2 million jobs WTTC had previously estimated to be under threat from the coronavirus pandemic.

The research shows that if these travel restrictions were removed sooner, it could save a staggering 1.7m jobs.

The impact of prolonged travel restrictions could also wipe out $186 billion in the sector’s contribution to UK GDP, equating to a 73% percent drop compared with 2019.

Meanwhile, the UK would suffer a sharp decline in visitor numbers of 73% for international arrivals and 71% for domestic arrivals.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our new modelling reveals the depth of the long-term crisis facing the UK Travel & Tourism industry if travel restrictions, such as the 14-day quarantine measures introduced by Government this week and the FCO travel advisory continue for some time.

“Under our worst-case scenario, prolonged travel restrictions could put nearly three million jobs under threat and cause a loss of more than $180 billion to Travel & Tourism GDP in the UK.

“The sector’s recovery risks being undermined by heavy-handed restrictions just as it emerges from one of the most punishing periods in its history – and it’s not just airlines who will bear the cost but the entire travel ecosystem.

“Hotels, destinations and travel agents will all suffer from the economic domino effect of prolonged restrictions on movement, plunging millions of travel businesses and their employees into financial ruin.”

WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, carried out the extensive research this week and its expert analysis came up with three possible outcomes for the sector:

  1. Worst-case scenario: Current restrictions starting to ease from September for short-haul travel, from October for mid-haul and from November for long-haul.

In this scenario, 2.9 million jobs could be lost in the UK Travel & Tourism sector, with a loss of $186 billion in GPD. Meanwhile, UK visitor numbers would drop by 73% for international arrivals.

  1. Baseline scenario: Current restrictions starting to ease from July for short-haul or regional travel; from August for mid-haul, and from September for long-haul.

In this scenario, a total of 1.9 million jobs could be lost in the UK Travel & Tourism sector, with a loss of $126 billion in GDP. Meanwhile, UK visitor numbers would drop by 57% for international arrivals and by 45% for domestic arrivals.

  1. Best-case scenario: Current measures starting to ease from June for short-haul and regional travel; from July for mid-haul and from August for long-haul.

In this scenario, a total of 1.6 million jobs could be lost in the UK Travel & Tourism sector, almost half the number in the worst-case scenario, with a loss of $106 billion in GDP. Meanwhile, UK visitor numbers would drop by 49% for international arrivals.

While the best-case scenario would undoubtedly still result in a devastating blow for Travel & Tourism, this outcome avoids unnecessary additional harm to the sector as a result of prolonged travel restrictions and protects more than a million UK jobs that could otherwise be lost.

This best-case scenario can still be achieved for the UK Travel & Tourism sector if the Government follows WTTC’s recommended four-point plan.

Firstly, the immediate removal and replacement of 14-day quarantine measures, with ‘air corridors’ to countries with similar circumstances to stimulate the Travel & Tourism sector and the wider UK economy, as well as the removal of travel advisories and bans on non- essential international travel, which prevent insurance protection cover for travellers.

Secondly, the adoption of global health and safety protocols, such as the ‘Safe Travels’ initiative recently launched by WTTC, to provide assurance to travellers that it is safe to travel again.

Thirdly, the implementation of a rapid test and trace strategy to help contain the spread of the virus, while still allowing people to travel responsibly at home and abroad.

And finally, greater and sustained collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure a standardised, global approach to the crisis.

Guevara added: “We’re calling on the Government to remove its quarantine policy as soon as possible to minimise the impact to its economy, which is currently putting the UK at a distinct competitive disadvantage. Instead, we recommend the opening of ‘travel corridors’ to countries which have controlled the spread and immediate support for the entire Travel & Tourism ecosystem to kick-start the UK’s economic recovery.”

As the sixth largest economy in the world, and the third largest in Europe in terms of Travel & Tourism GDP, a healthy UK travel sector is vital to global recovery.

WTTC analysis shows that the Travel & Tourism sector contributes 9% of the UK’s GDP and is supports11% of total UK employment.

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 8th June 2020

Saint Ange Tourism Report – 8th June 2020

Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles, June 8, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / This edition of the Saint Ange Tourism Report is issued just days after the Seychelles Electoral Commission announced 22, 23 and 24 October as the dates for the island’s 2020 Presidential Elections. The next three plus months will therefore see political manouverings as candidate intensify their campaigns.

The political parties will bring out political coloured banners and posters to depict their party and candidate. These elections are seen as the needed remedy for the current difficulties and hardship being felt by the majority of Seychellois Islanders who have been fed promises after promises to help them survive the economic challenges arising from the COVID-19 epidemic.

This is why this coming election may well be seen as a referendum on those sitting in elected offices. Have they done enough to mitigate the difficulties being experienced on the ground? Can the business community survive the economic malaise? The value of the Seychelles Rupee has fallen and this has come with a sudden rise in cost of living with prices for food stuff going through the roof. But the lowest earners are still on their five odd thousand rupees per month and they include the most vulnerable in our society: – the old age pensioners, the home carers, the contract workers employed as cleaners in Government Offices, the supply teachers among others. Can anyone sleep in peace when such a dire situation exists in our Seychelles.

Many other areas of concern will also be points to be taken into account for the referendum. The military sitting with a guillotine over their head following the threat of the demolition of the armed forces. The drug users being threatened to be treated ‘cold turkey’ with no real feeling for the families and of the situation they are finding themselves in. The high level of taxes that just continues to be levied on the hard working business community and the pay packet (inclusive of additional perks) of Seychellois versus that earned by politicians. So many points will be analysed as the dates for this referendum approaches.

The US has nominated Danny Faure as their candidate, LDS has nominated Wavel Ramkalawan, Lalyans Seselwa is confirming Patrick Pillay as its candidate and One Seychelles will be holding their party convention (within the constraints of the COVID-19 advisory of social distancing) on the 27th June to formally announce their Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates. I personally like the chosen date of the 24th October. This is the United Nations Day and also my Birthday.

COVID-19 is here and we shall all have to learn to live with it

The COVID-19 epidemic arrived and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has made a statement that COVID-19 will be with us for a very long time and this with or without a vaccine. This only serves to tell us all that we need to learn how to exist even when faced with such an epidemic.

COVID-19 has united the world against a common enemy but it has brought the world of tourism to its knees. Many an economy in the Community of Nations are today accepting the fact that tourism remains the industry that is a catalyst to economic survival. Without tourism or cross border travel the aviation industry froze and the millions around the world who earned a living because of a buoyant tourism industry are today sitting on welfare assistance. This is as valid for the world at large as it is for Seychelles where tourism has been for many years the pillar of the island’s economy.
COVID-19 has brought to the world the realisation that tourism is an important industry and that its vulnerability should not and must not be taken for granted. As countries closed their borders, planes were grounded and many an airline company folded. Travellers went on lock-down in a bid to stop the spread of the virus as the world worked night and day to understand this virus. Today we all know that the drastic measures, however necessary under the circumstances, have brought misery for the people and great difficulty for businesses affiliated or not with tourism. How many working men and women managing their own businesses will not survive the months of financial uncertainty to come.

Many are feeling let down, as politicians talked and made promises, the people were faced with their biggest challenges and fighting to survive. Stimulus packages for the private sector to ensure they remain afloat were seen as not adequate and were often but a means to see if the people had managed to make a saving or not and if yes to discourage them from ever banking their surplus income for fear of being punished for having been a serious business personality. Seychelles businesses are suffering and even when a claim for assistance is approved, it is only a fraction of what is needed, the people as a whole are feeling the pressure of increased cost of living as the climbing exchange rate of the US Dollar saw the value of the Seychelles Rupee crumble. If tourism is not relaunched soon the value of the US Dollar will continue to bring increases in cost of living and compound the suffering for us islanders.

Seychelles Tourism must re-open

The economic situation in Seychelles is clear for all to see – it needs attention. People are suffering and the only industry that is able to bring immediate redress is tourism. The islands need leadership and this with the ability or experience to bring about the needed change to get the economy back on track.

Seychelles has announced a slow somewhat discriminatory re-opening program that will condemn more business to closures because they cannot sustain the forced closure any longer. Reopening does not mean that the islands will see a sudden invasion by tourists, it will be a phased approach anyway but imposing more quarantine measures now may just be a final nail for many. Seychelles must be looking at mitigating the challenges by being proactive and working with airlines planning to launch flights to Seychelles. Rapid tests at boarding is an option, but not trying to milk the tourists deciding to come here with overcharged rates for the tests. We need the tourists and they do not need us. Seychelles needs its tourism industry more than ever before and as competing tourism destinations move to reopen they will be aggressive and will fight for their share of the market. We must come down from our high horses and be humble if we want to relaunch the industry our people so need and the industry our economy must have. Many an announcement made are based on what we see on the horizon such as placing China on the list of not vulnerable countries only because of possible charters being assessed today. An open national dialogue is needed NOW.

The COVID-19 pandemic remains a trying moment. Tourism destinations must remain a people’s industry where the human touch guides the day to day industry. Tourists will interact with us Seychellois even if only selected islands are opened. No Seychellois can be guinea pigs. Tourism is for everyone to work for and benefit from. The people and their livelihood must be placed at the centre of every decision taken. Should the businesses that keep the people in employment be the focus of decisions or are the authorities planning to pay everyone until WHO announces one day that the epidemic is over – it is a known fact that the Seychelles Government cannot really afford this. A referendum on the actions taken by all in elected offices will arrive very soon and the People will have their chance to pass judgement on everything done and executed in the name of the People, for the People and by the People.

A recent community styled meeting at Anse Aux Pins that saw Gafur Yakub and Andre Rassool join a Government PS to talk about diversifying the economic base with greater emphasis on agriculture. It was a great move and Rev Fr Lonnie Adrienne, the Roman Catholic Priest of Anse Aux Pins and those who helped organise this meeting need to be congratulated. This will help and needs to be supported, but tomorrow onwards it is still tourism that remains the industry to pull Seychelles out of the doldrums it finds itself in.

Club Liberte Casino reopens

After a few properties cleared by the Government for receiving tourists, Club Liberte Casino was also given the go ahead to resume business on the 1st June 2020 by the Department of Health.

Operating in Anse Soleil, Baie Lazare opposite The Four Seasons Resort, the casino offers Gaming tables, slot machines, Bar Lounge area and 5 Spices Restaurant with a renowned sushi bar.

“We have built up a good reputation as a quality entertainment venue catering for everyone. Our main focus is on making sure that customers are feeling protected in our venue, without disrupting the services our customers enjoy. We are all having to adapt to the ‘new normal’ like all businesses reopening during the current situation.”

“We hope to host you all on your next visit to us and that you are keeping safe, from the Team at Club Liberte Casino and 5 Spices Restaurant” said the Casino Operators.

Seychelles tourism restarts with first applications for entry of private jets and yachts

A regular source from Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, has confirmed that more than a dozen applications have already been lodged with local aviation and health authorities for private jets to fly into Mahe, or for luxury yachts to dock at port Victoria.

The Public Health Commissioner Jude Gedeon has also confirmed this development, sinc the airport was reopened on the 01st of June but apparently cautioned that due process was required to assess each and every application and then follow the strict guidelines for arriving passengers in regard to immediate health checks and a follow up a few days later.

Visitors so allowed to enter the Seychelles are also restricted to stay at their chosen resort only and are presently not permitted to move around the island or between islands.

The Seychelles have designated 19 countries as low risk including notably China, where the pandemic started and which stands constantly accused of a massive cover up, but also Australia, Botswana, Israel, Mauritius, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and Japan, among others.

Visitors to the Seychelles should also note that with immediate effect a charge of US Dollars 50 has come into effect to cover for the expenses of health checks though it is not clear for how long this fee will apply, especially when mainstream tourism begins to flow in again.

The Seychelles reopens international airport

Seychelles International Airport has reopened, the UK’s Foreign Office has confirmed.

There are currently no commercial flights offering travel to or from Seychelles, but inter-island transport has resumed.

Revised timetables and guidelines for passengers have been published for air and ferry transport options.

On 1 June, the same day the airport reopened, the Seychelles eased some of its restrictions in relation to coronavirus on the islands.

Restaurants and shops are now permitted to trade, but social distancing rules remain in place.

Indoor seated public shows; conferences and meetings; bars; casinos; sports competitions (without spectators); gyms and fitness facilities; cinemas; and marine leisure crafts are also now permitted. All organisers of these events must receive permission from the Department of Health in the Seychelles.

Beach activities involving family members from the same household are permitted. However, beach parties are not permitted.

Restrictions are enforceable by law and can change at short notice, th FCO warned, adding that visitors should consult the Department of Health in the country for further information and monitor local media for the latest developments.

WTTC Gives Global Destinations Stamp of Approval for Safety Protocols

WTTC Gives Global Destinations Stamp of Approval for Safety Protocols

London, Great Britain, June 8, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / Key destinations recognised by the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp. Major destinations around the world have signed up to the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp, launched recently by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

The extensive endorsements have come from many major holiday destinations around the world, from Bulgaria to Turkey and Jamaica to Mauritius, among many others.

WTTC, which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, designed the special Safe Travels stamp to enable travellers to identify destinations and businesses around the world which adopted its health and hygiene global standardised protocols – so consumers and holidaymakers can experience ‘Safe Travels’.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) also embraced the WTTC Safe Travels stamp, which have the safety and hygiene of travellers as their top priority.

Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “The number of global destinations adopting our private sector protocols is growing at a rapid pace and it’s hugely gratifying and shows the success and importance of the WTTC Safe Travels stamp.

“The stamp is vital to re-establish worldwide consumer confidence in Travel & Tourism and so travellers can be sure that enhanced standards of hygiene are in place for them to be able to travel safely.

“As WTTC health and hygiene protocols, affecting hotels, restaurants, airports, cruise lines, tour operators, restaurants, outdoor shopping and transportation are implemented, so the list of destinations recognising the new stamp also continues to grow.

“We thank these destination countries and cities for stepping forward to help ensure the speedy recovery of the Travel & Tourism sector and look forward to welcoming more destinations in the days and weeks ahead as our desire to travel continues to revive.”

Since the launch last week of the Safe Travels stamp, Turkey, Bulgaria, Jamaica, Mauritius, Ontario (Canada), Portugal, Saudi Arabia and the Mexican destinations of Baja California Sur and Yucatan, have now adopted WTTC’s new protocols.

Popular city destinations for holidaymakers which have also been given the WTTC Safe Travels stamp of approval include Barcelona, Cancun, Madrid and Seville.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Turkish Minister of Culture & Tourism said: “Turkey has been a role model for the world during COVID-19 with its well-established health system and treatment methods. We have also pioneered setting the direction for safe tourism with a certification program for normalization of tourism and we are now glad to see WTTC bringing the efforts to a global level.’’

H.E. Mrs. Nikolina Angelkova, Minister of Tourism for Bulgaria said: “Tourism is a cause, it brings a better future for all, and we can solve crises and challenges together. In this regard, we welcome the Safe Travels initiative by WTTC that will ensure a swift recovery of the Travel & Tourism Sector and restore the trust of the travellers. The COVID-19 crisis in our country undoubtedly has shown that only united – the government, the business, and the citizens, with timely held measures can limit the spread of the virus.

“Bulgaria has always been an attractive tourism destination and we will continue to welcome tourists with the same hospitality and warmth. “

Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of the State of Baja California Sur, said “It is an honour to have our State included in the list of destinations using the Safe Travels stamp; we are hugely supportive of the global protocols as the health and safety of our travellers is our priority”.

“The tourism destinations within our state are ready to receive travellers with open arms and to contribute to the reactivation of the sector in the country.”

Mauricio Vila, Governor of Yucatan said: “Yucatán is an example when it comes to security and best practices, we are now looking to become that example in terms of biosecurity for tourism. We are delighted to be recognised with the Safe travels stamp from WTTC.”
Almudena Maíllo, Councilor for Tourism, Madrid City Hall said: “In the city of Madrid, we are fully committed with the health, safety and security of our visitors. In the evolution we are leading for tourism recovery, it is crucial that our industry implement measures and protocols to regain confidence in travel. We support and applaud this WTTC Safe Travels initiative, as it matches the needs of travellers and the tourism sector, with clear safety and health recommendations, allowing businesses to easily provide their clients a visual identification that the Safe Travels protocols are being implemented”.

Two weeks ago, WTTC’s launched the first of range of new worldwide measures as part of its Safe Travels protocols, providing consistency and guidance to travel providers and travellers about the new approach to health, hygiene, deep cleansing and physical distancing, in the ‘new normal’ of COVID-19 world.

The protocols were devised following the experience of WTTC members dealing with COVID19 and based on guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Evidence from WTTC’s Crisis Readiness report, which looked at 90 different types of crises in the last 20 years, highlights the importance of public-private cooperation to ensure a successful recovery.

According to WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report, during 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for one in 10 jobs (330 million total), making a 10.3% contribution to global GDP and generating one in four of all new jobs.

Editor’s Notes:
WTTC has created nine overarching principles & objectives for the Travel & Tourism Sector in the post-lockdown and recovery stage:
1. Have the sector lead the definition of industry regulation as Travel & Tourism moves from crisis management to recovery
2. Put the safety, health and security of travellers and the Travel & Tourism workforce at the core of the development of global standards
3. Ensure coherence in the approach and development of new global standards through a coordinated, collaborative, and transparent approach within the Travel & Tourism sector
4. Share harmonised and consistent standards and guidelines across destinations and countries.
5. Collaborate with key actors across the Travel & Tourism supply and value chain to ensure readiness to restart operations

Nairobi, Kenya, June 7, 2020 / TRAVELINDEX / Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Najib Balala, officially launched a virtual safari Livestream campaign yesterday in an effort to showcase some of the country’s most picturesque game safaris across its national parks and reserves.

The campaign will continue for six weeks covering the country and will be part of the ongoing “Magic Awaits” campaign led by the Kenya Tourism Board. The “Magic Awaits” campaign aims at connecting the world to Kenya, and advertising Kenya’s tourism industry even during the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s own lockdown, which have restricted movement, globally and locally, respectively.

“Our international tourism business is completely cut off and we have to still share destination memories with travellers and that is why we are unveiling a virtual tour safari to connect visitors with the destination”, says Secretary Balala.

The FDJP announced in mid-May that the borders with Austria, Germany and France would be fully reopened on 15 June in agreement with the authorities of those countries.
