Within the framework of the 2025 FITUR international tourism trade fair, the two organizations jointly hosted a special Investments Breakfast, bringing together public and private sector leaders to explore opportunities and challenges surrounding driving investments into the sector across the region. The event highlighted the massive investment potential of the region, noting:

  • Between 2019 and 2023, Latin America and the Caribbean attracted 213 greenfield foreign direct investment projects in tourism
  • These projects generated more than US$20 billion in capital and more than 73,000 jobs

The Americas, as a whole, is one of the regions with the best recovery, registering a 7% increase in international arrivals in the last year. This progress consolidates the region as a dynamic destination in constant recovery, with a high probability of closing the year with higher values than in 2019

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “The Americas, as a whole, is one of the regions with the best recovery, registering a 7% increase in international arrivals in the last year. This progress consolidates the region as a dynamic destination in constant recovery, with a high probability of closing the year with higher values than in 2019. However, this progress requires the continued support of strategic investments. UN Tourism and CAF are working together to grow and direct investments in the sector, to boost resilience and promote sustainable growth.”

Investment Guidelines: Brazil and Panama editions launched

Further advancing the strategic collaboration between UN Tourism and CAF, investment guidelines focused on Brazil and Panama were presented at the event. The guidelines, part of UN Tourism’s growing portfolio of “Tourism Doing Business” publications, outline the investment potential of destinations, making clear opportunities and challenges and charting key numbers and trends. Key takeaways of the latest additions to the series include:

  • Inward FDI flows in Brazil amounted to USD 65,897 million in 2023, which represented a decrease of 10.2% compared to 2022, and a growth of 0.8% compared to 2019.
  • According to the OECD, Brazil was the second largest destination of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2023, surpassed only by the United States
  • In the first half of 2024, Panama attracted USD 1.61 billion in FDI, an increase of 23% over the same period in 2023, standing out in the region as a reliable destination for foreign investment in all sectors.
  • Panama consolidated its position as the country in Central America with the second-highest number of greenfield FDI project announcements in tourism between 2018 and 2023. In this period, the country registered 6 tourism projects, representing 20.1% of the region’s announcements, with a total investment of USD 2,652 million and the creation of more than 13,800 jobs.

UN Tourism Executive Director Natalia Bayona adds: “The Americas is one of the most exciting global regions for tourism investments in the world right now. More than US$20 billion worth of greenfield investment in capital has flowed into the country over recent years, creating tens of thousands of jobs and transforming the sector. With CAF, UN Tourism is taking tourism investments to the next level, building a more resilient and diverse sector right across the region.”

UN Tourism Backs CAF’s Regional Brand

In Madrid, UN Tourism reaffirmed its support for the Regional Brand, created by CAF to unify the region under a common identity. This brand is designed to strengthen the region’s voice globally, promote investments, boost tourism, and position Latin America and the Caribbean as a region capable of offering solutions to major global challenges.

The Philippines to Host the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2026 - TRAVELINDEXJohor Bahru, Malaysia, January 24, 2025 / TRAVELINDEX / The Philippines has been officially designated as the host country for the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2026, stepping in after Myanmar withdrew from its hosting responsibilities in the regional event rotation. This significant announcement was made during a ceremonial handover at the conclusion of ATF 2025, held at the Johor International Convention Center in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on January 20, 2025. The symbolic gavel, representing the transfer of hosting duties, was handed over to Philippines Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco by Malaysia’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing. This moment marked the Philippines’ formal acceptance of the chairmanship of ATF 2026, underscoring its commitment to leading one of the most prestigious tourism events in the ASEAN region.

ATF 2026 will feature a series of high-profile events, including the ASEAN Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, which will be held in the picturesque province of Cebu in January 2026. Preparatory meetings leading up to the main event will take place in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and Boracay, a world-renowned island destination known for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism industry. In addition to the ministerial meetings, the Philippines will also host the TRAVEX trade show, a key component of the ATF that brings together tourism stakeholders from across the region to showcase their products and services. Various conferences and side events will further enrich the program, providing a platform for discussions on sustainable tourism, regional cooperation, and economic growth.

During the ceremonial handover, Secretary Frasco extended a warm invitation to ASEAN member states and international partners at the ‘Love the Philippines Night,’ a special event held to celebrate the Philippines’ upcoming hosting role. In her address, she emphasized the country’s renowned hospitality and deep sense of community, inviting attendees to experience the beauty and culture of the Philippines firsthand. “The Philippines, with its spirit of hospitality and deep sense of community, stands ready to open its pristine shores to all of you, where we will write a new chapter of the ASEAN story: a legacy of unity, sustainability, and prosperity for all,” she said. She highlighted Cebu as a symbol of unity and a model for sustainable tourism, where communities, businesses, and governments collaborate to create a tourism ecosystem that is both profitable and responsible.

Secretary Frasco also took the opportunity to outline the Philippines’ vision for ATF 2026, emphasizing the importance of sustainable tourism and regional collaboration. “As the Philippines takes on the Chairmanship of ASEAN 2026, I invite you to join us in the Philippines for the 29th ASEAN Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Cebu on January 2026. It will be an opportunity not just to discuss policies, but to witness firsthand the immense potential for sustainable tourism growth in the region,” she said. She underscored the unique cultural heritage and natural beauty of Cebu, which she described as a testament to the power of unity and collaboration in achieving sustainable tourism goals.

The Philippines’ hosting of ATF 2026 builds on its recent successes in the tourism sector, including the successful hosting of the 36th UN Tourism Joint Commission Meeting for the Asia Pacific and South Asia, as well as the inaugural UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism. These events have positioned the Philippines as a key player in the global tourism landscape and a champion of sustainable and inclusive tourism development.

In addition to her role in the ATF 2025, Secretary Frasco served as vice chair at the 28th ASEAN Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, where she played a pivotal role in advancing regional tourism initiatives. The meeting was attended by tourism ministers from ASEAN member states, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Timor Leste, and Vietnam, as well as representatives from dialogue partners such as Russia, Japan, India, and South Korea. As the lead country coordinator for the development of the ASEAN Tourism Sectoral Plan (ATSP) Post-2025, Secretary Frasco presented updates and recommendations aimed at fostering a tourism sector that drives equitable and sustainable economic growth across the region.

“The ATSP envisions a tourism landscape that not only stimulates economic progress but does so in a manner that is equitable and sustainable. Our focus extends beyond quantity to quality – prioritizing convenience and safety in tourism, promoting longer stays and increased spending, all while safeguarding our natural resources and honoring our heritage and culture,” Secretary Frasco explained. She emphasized the Philippines’ commitment to working closely with its ASEAN neighbors to build a tourism industry that not only boosts economic growth but also preserves the unique cultures and ecosystems that make the region a truly special destination.

Secretary Frasco also highlighted the importance of ASEAN unity, describing the bloc as a “family” united by a shared vision for mutual prosperity. “United by a shared vision for the mutual prosperity of our nations, we perpetuate the notion that tourism is a force for good: transforming lives, sustaining livelihoods, forging friendships, and creating memories etched in the hearts of all who come upon our streets and shores,” she said. Her remarks underscored the transformative power of tourism as a tool for fostering regional cooperation, cultural exchange, and sustainable development.

As the Philippines prepares to host ATF 2026, the country is poised to showcase its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and world-class hospitality on the global stage. The event will not only highlight the Philippines’ tourism potential but also reinforce its commitment to advancing sustainable and inclusive tourism practices in collaboration with its ASEAN partners. With Cebu at the center of the festivities, ATF 2026 promises to be a landmark event that celebrates the unity, diversity, and shared aspirations of the ASEAN community.

3. Types of Musandam Tours

There are several types of tours available for visitors looking to explore Musandam. These tours cater to different interests and offer unique ways to experience the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Dhow Cruises

A dhow cruise is one of the most popular and iconic ways to explore Musandam’s stunning fjords. Traditional Omani dhows, which are wooden sailing vessels, take visitors on a scenic journey through the khors, offering breathtaking views of the cliffs and mountains. Most dhow cruises include stops for snorkeling, swimming, and dolphin watching. Guests can relax on deck while soaking in the natural beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.

Dhow cruises often include lunch or dinner on board, featuring local Omani cuisine, adding to the overall cultural experience. These tours can range from half-day excursions to full-day trips, depending on the itinerary.

Snorkeling and Diving Tours

For those interested in exploring Musandam’s underwater world, snorkeling and diving tours are a must. The waters around Musandam are incredibly clear, providing excellent visibility for observing marine life. Coral reefs, colorful fish, and even the occasional sea turtle can be spotted during these tours.

Several dive sites around Musandam are suitable for both beginner and experienced divers, with options to visit secluded coves and remote islands. Tour operators offer guided snorkeling and diving experiences, complete with all necessary equipment.

Mountain Safaris

Musandam’s mountainous terrain provides a perfect backdrop for off-road safaris. Visitors can embark on a 4×4 mountain safari to explore the region’s rugged landscapes, steep cliffs, and hidden valleys. One of the most popular destinations for mountain safaris is Jebel Harim, Musandam’s highest peak, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding region.

On a mountain safari, travelers can visit remote villages, ancient rock art, and terraced farms, giving them a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of Musandam’s people. It’s an excellent way to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region.

Cultural and Heritage Tours

Musandam is rich in history and culture, and cultural tours offer a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage. These tours often include visits to historic forts, such as Khasab Fort and Bukha Fort, as well as trips to local villages where visitors can interact with the local community.

Cultural tours also provide insight into the traditional way of life in Musandam, including fishing, dhow building, and agriculture. Visitors can learn about the region’s Bedouin roots and how the people of Musandam have adapted to their challenging environment.

4. Must-Visit Attractions in Musandam

Musandam is home to several iconic attractions that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. These destinations showcase the region’s natural beauty, history, and culture.

Khasab Town

As the capital of Musandam, Khasab is a small, picturesque town known for its friendly atmosphere and coastal charm. The town’s most prominent landmark is Khasab Fort, a 17th-century Portuguese-built fortress that now houses a museum showcasing the region’s history and culture.

Khasab is also the starting point for many dhow cruises and tours, making it a convenient base for exploring the rest of Musandam. Visitors can wander through the town’s souks, sample local cuisine, and enjoy the stunning views of the mountains and sea.

Telegraph Island

Telegraph Island is one of Musandam’s most famous landmarks, located in the middle of Khor Ash Sham, one of the region’s largest fjords. The island gets its name from the British telegraph station that was established there in the mid-19th century as part of the telegraph line connecting India and Britain.

Today, Telegraph Island is a popular stop on dhow cruises, where visitors can swim, snorkel, and explore the remains of the old telegraph station. The island is surrounded by clear blue waters and offers stunning views of the surrounding fjords.

Jebel Harim

Jebel Harim, meaning “Mountain of Women,” is the highest peak in Musandam, standing at 2,087 meters above sea level. The mountain is a popular destination for mountain safaris, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes and the Arabian Gulf.

The drive to Jebel Harim takes visitors through scenic mountain roads, past terraced farms, and ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock by early inhabitants of the region. The peak is also home to a variety of wildlife, including mountain goats and eagles.

Bukha Fort

Bukha Fort is another historic fortress located near the town of Bukha, on the western coast of Musandam. The fort dates back to the 16th century and offers stunning views of the Gulf of Oman. It is a well-preserved example of traditional Omani architecture and provides insight into the region’s defensive history.

Seebi Island

Seebi Island is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of Musandam, known for its pristine beaches and excellent snorkeling opportunities. The island is often included as a stop on dhow cruises, where visitors can swim, snorkel, and enjoy a picnic on the beach.

The people of Musandam have a deep connection to the sea, with fishing and dhow building being central to their way of life for centuries. Visitors can learn about these traditions through cultural tours and visits to local villages.

Musandam’s strategic location at the Strait of Hormuz has also played a significant role in its history, with the region being a key point of control for maritime trade routes between the Arabian Peninsula and the rest of the world.

8. Best Time to Visit Musandam

The best time to visit Musandam is during the cooler months, from October to April, when the weather is mild and pleasant. During this time, temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities such as dhow cruises, snorkeling, and hiking.

The summer months (June to September) can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C. While it’s still possible to visit Musandam during the summer, many outdoor activities may be uncomfortable due to the heat.

9. Practical Travel Tips for Musandam Tours

  • Visa Requirements: Depending on your nationality, you may need a visa to enter Oman. If you’re traveling from the UAE, many tour operators can arrange a visa for you at the border.
  • Currency: The local currency is the Omani Rial (OMR), but UAE Dirhams (AED) are also widely accepted in Musandam.
  • What to Pack: Be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable clothing for outdoor activities. If you plan to go snorkeling or diving, bring your swimwear and a waterproof camera to capture the underwater scenery.
