Capella Hanoi Opens its Doors in the Capital’s Old Quarter

Capella Hanoi Opens its Doors in the Capital’s Old Quarter

Hanoi, Vietnam, April 2, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Capella Hanoi has officially opened its doors, ushering in a new era of art and elegance in the heart of Vietnam’s vibrant capital city. Located just steps away from the iconic Hanoi Opera House, this beautiful boutique hotel has been dreamt up as a “petite auberge” – a rendezvous spot for the greatest opera singers, composers and artists of a glamorous bygone age.

The highly-anticipated Bill Bensley-designed hotel invites travellers to relive the era of the Grand Opera while discovering the authentic essence of life in Hanoi’s historic Hoan Kiem district.

Nestled in the French-influenced Old Quarter, close to Hoan Kiem Lake and surrounded by eclectic restaurants, bars, shops and markets, Capella Hanoi was designed by Bill Bensley, the highly-acclaimed architect behind Capella Ubud, Bali, the “No.1 Hotel in the World” in 2020. Capella Ubud Bali is also a Nominee in the much awaited Top 25 Hotels in the World, the World’s Best Luxury Hotels.

The 47 themed rooms and suites at Capella Hanoi (ranging from a generous 35 sqm to an expansive 194 sqm) are individually styled with original operatic artefacts and custom portraiture art by prolific artist Kate Spencer, and equipped with bespoke services and state-of-the-art amenities. Crowning the hotel, four Opera Suites open out onto spacious alfresco terraces with views of the tree-lined avenues below.

The hotel’s signature restaurant, Backstage, presents a dramatic backdrop of theatrical costumes and vintage tableware, as talented chefs craft exceptional cuisine, including vegan dishes and northern Vietnamese-inspired specialties that fuse locally-sourced produce and contemporary cooking techniques. Diva’s Lounge meanwhile, pays tribute to the leading ladies of the 1920s with bohemian cocktails and Opera Punches, accompanied by Diva’s Bar bites.

Serving as the social heart of the hotel, The Living Room offers a collection of Comoedia Illustré and a programme of Capella Moments. Every day of the week, guests can discover the essence of northern Vietnam with expert-led classes in bamboo paper fan making, Vietnamese coffee cupping, Sarah Bernhardt’s cookie making and the chance to sample Vietnamese rum. A local team of Capella Culturists will be on hand to help guests uncover the city’s heritage through a series of Capella Curates experiences, such as Lacquer Your Life, which offers the opportunity to learn Vietnamese lacquer painting from a master artist, and Hanoi Spirit, which invites guests to infuse their own gin using native botanicals at Vietnam’s only gin distillery.

Weary travellers can soothe their senses at Auriga Spa, the exquisite spa that features couples’ treatment suites, saunas, steam baths, a fitness centre and La Grotta, an indoor pool that resembles a haven for opera singers to rest their voices. In this enchanting ambience, guests can unwind with Auriga’s award-winning treatments, blending modern spa science with natural products and embracing the changing phases of the moon to create truly elevated spa journeys.

“Vietnam is one of the world’s most dynamic destinations, where the spirit and energy is reminiscent of the roaring 1920s, when anything seemed possible. At Capella, we strive to create guest experiences that go beyond bespoke hospitality and let travellers touch the heart and soul of their destination, through cultural exposures, epicurean adventures and original art. With Bill Bensley’s inimitable design, a sense of opulence and a deep respect for our surroundings, we will let our guests feel the pulse of Hanoi,” commented Christoph Strahm, general manager, Capella Hanoi.

To celebrate its opening, Capella Hanoi has unveiled the “Dream Now, Travel Later” package, which invites global explorers to pre-book future stays of up to 14 nights, with 30% off the best available rate and a wealth of amenities and activities. Having arrived at Capella Hanoi, every guest will be treated to a slice of Opera Cake, and each morning starts in style with the signature Capella Champagne Breakfast at Backstage. Visitors can uncover the rich heritage of Hanoi through daily rituals and Capella Moments, and guests who stay for three or more nights will enjoy a customised in-room dining experience and generous 30% discounts at Auriga Spa and all restaurants and bars.

Guests can pre-pay for this attractive package and confirm their exact dates-of-stay when the international travel landscape becomes clearer. All inclusions are based on two guests. Rates start from just USD 315++ per room per night.

Capella Hanoi becomes the sixth addition to the prestigious Capella Hotels & Resorts collection, the first in Vietnam and the fourth in Southeast Asia, joining Capella Bangkok, Capella Singapore, and Capella Ubud

UNWTO Welcomes EU Support to Lead the Way in Tourism’s Restart

UNWTO Welcomes EU Support to Lead the Way in Tourism’s Restart

Madrid, Spain, April 1, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / Only with strong and coordinated political action can Europe reopen to tourism in time for the peak summer season. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has again stressed the importance of collaboration as it welcomed European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas to Madrid for a high-level meeting focused on the joined-up response to the ongoing crisis, and on advancing plans for tourism’s vital restart.

Read all the latest UNWTO News and Announcements here.

As the latest data shows an 85% fall in tourist arrivals across Europe at the start of 2021, UNWTO has noted Europe can set a global example by restarting the sector. Given tourism’s huge socio-economic importance, the benefits that will accompany the return of tourism in time for the peak European season will be felt well outside of the sector itself. This heightened relevance of tourism was reflected in the visit of the highest-level European Union delegation to UNWTO headquarters to date. Meeting with the Vice-President, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili further emphasised the need for harmonized protocols and digital solutions to make safe international travel possible.

UNWTO has congratulated the European Commission for taking the lead and advancing plans to launch its Digital Green Pass, recognizing its potential to restart tourism in a number of destinations. At the same time, the UNWTO leadership also credited the Commission’s intentions to support national recovery and resilience plans, as well as the recent launch of the ‘Re-Open EU’ website and mobile app, both of which effectively complement UNWTO’s own global #RestartTourism campaign.

Tourism for economic and social wellbeing

Now more than ever, tourism needs strong political support and joined-up action. Harmonized travel and health rules are essential to restore confidence and restart tourism

Secretary-General Pololikashvili said: “Across Europe, millions of people and businesses are depending on the right decisions to be made so that tourism can restart. Today’s visit of Vice-President Margaritis Schinas is testament to the importance of tourism to economic and social wellbeing across the European Union. Now more than ever, tourism needs strong political support and joined-up action. Harmonized travel and health rules are essential to restore confidence and restart tourism.”

Vice-President Margaritis Schinas adds: “With vaccinations and better management of the crisis, there is no doubt this summer will be better than last. Reopening borders will have an impact beyond tourism. It will drive Europe’s overall recovery. And Europe will not return on its own. Europe is part of the world and we are ready find a way that the European Green Pass works with solutions provided by countries or groups of countries from outside the EU.”

Strong, ongoing collaboration

UNWTO has been working closely with the European institutions since the start of the pandemic. The UNWTO World Tourism Barometer and Travel Restrictions Report provide trusted data to guide the European Commission’s response, as well as the policies of individual EU Member States. In Madrid, Vice-President Schinas was advised of the progress UNWTO is making towards establishing a first International Code for the Protection of Tourists, a vital step towards restoring confidence in travel.

The Vice-President also signalled his availability to participate in the next meeting of UNWTO’s Global Tourism Crisis Committee, a cross-sector body established at the start of the crisis and now focusing on resuming safe international travel, restoring confidence and ensuring tourism businesses the liquidity they need to survive and protect jobs.  In recognition of his long-standing contributions to European tourism and his recognition of the importance of the sector to the European Way of Life, Secretary-General Pololikashvili presented Vice-President Schinas with a plaque to commemorate his visit to the UNWTO headquarters.

Tourism Recovery Strategies Highlighted at WTO Aid for Trade Event

Tourism Recovery Strategies Highlighted at WTO Aid for Trade Event

Manila, Philippines, April 1, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / The Asian Development Bank (ADB) partnered with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to lead a conversation on what the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on global tourism means for development across the Asia-Pacific region. Held as part of the World Trade Organization’s Aid-for-Trade Stocktaking Event, the special session brought key sector representatives together to assess how the sector can be transformed to drive recovery and build sustainability.

Read all the latest UNWTO News and Announcements here.

According to the latest data from UNWTO, the pandemic led to a 73% fall globally in international tourist arrivals in 2020. The drop has been even steeper in Asia-Pacific where ADB estimates a decline of over 80% for 2020, as many Asian countries continued to impose strict travel restrictions. This sudden fall has placed the sector’s ability to drive sustainable development forward on hold.

Building Sustainability and Resilience

The special event at WTO, moderated by Anna Fink, Economist at ADB, explored how ‘aid-for-trade’ can be used to build greater sustainability and resilience in the tourism sector. Joining Matthias Helble Senior Economist at the Asian Development Bank and Zoritsa Urosevic Director of Institutional Relations and Partnerships at UNWTO were representatives from the governments of Azerbaijan and New Zealand, and Suzanne Becken, a tourism expert from Griffith University.

ADB’s Matthias Helble shared that, according to latest ADB estimates, a full recovery for the sector is only expected by 2023 at the earliest. Promotion of domestic tourism, as well as the creation of ‘travel bubbles’ that would allow travel to resume between certain destinations, were highlighted as potential strategies for driving recovery in the short-term. The introduction of vaccine passes could further accelerate recovery. However, these measures should only be temporary, and countries ultimately need to prepare for a full opening.

Read all the latest UNWTO News and Announcements here.

Short and Long-Term Support for Tourism

ADB’s Matthias Helble stressed that a prolonged pandemic puts the survival of large parts of the tourism sector at risk. To help governments finance policy measures that facilitate targeted aid to households and firms most severely affected by the pandemic, ADB launched a $20 billion support package in April 2020. By the end of 2020, ADB had committed $16.3 billion of this package in the form of grants, technical assistance, and loans to developing member governments and the private sector. At the same time, UNWTO has expanded on its support to Member States across the region, including through the launch of the UNWTO Tourism Recovery Technical Assistance Package, delivering expert support to destinations across the historic Silk Road.

For longer-term recovery, UNWTO’s Zoritsa Urosevic stressed the importance of developing a new finance architecture to to adopt and build innovative, low carbon, circular, safe, and inclusive business policies, and instruments for recovery. At the same time, both ADB and UNWTO reiterated the importance of international cooperation and the harmonization of policies, both to restart international tourism and then to monitor and guide future growth to ensure the sector delivers on its potential to drive sustainable development.

Royal Osha Reinvents Classic Thai Elegance

Royal Osha Reinvents Classic Thai Elegance

Bangkok, Thailand, March 31, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / In celebration of the up and coming summer months, Royal Osha luxury Thai fine dining and Michelin recommended restaurant – a venue to wine and dine very special people in your life as well as for auspicious occasions and dates – is introducing the popular Khao Chae and Khao Yum to its menu.

To offer the most luxury fine-dining experience, Royal Osha has sourced only the finest products and ingredients from around the world and the freshest, home-grown culinary ‘treasures’ from all over Thailand.  And to reflect the cultural diversities of Thailand, popular local and seasonal dishes from the four regions of the country, central Thailand, the north, Esaan and the south, have been carefully selected and added to both the a la carte and set menu under the concept “Classic Thai Elegance Reinvented,” where traditional Thai taste meets international standard under the capable hands of Chef Vichit Mukura, recipient of a Michelin Star in 2020.

To welcome the summer season and the auspicious Thai New Year, Royal Osha and executive chef and partner Chef Vichit Mukura are proud to present Royal Osha’s own version of the traditional Khao Chae and Khao Yum.  The intricate and traditional recipes have been carefully interpreted by Chef Vichit to include only the premium ingredients and to please the most discerning palates without compromising the authenticity and integrities of the original recipes.

“Our mission is to introduce a new experience and angle to traditional Thai food for both Thais and visitors to Thailand,” says Suphapitch Pitayanukul, managing director of Royal Osha.  “Here at our restaurant, traditional Thai food is treated and interpreted with utmost respect every step of the way. Thai culture and Thai ways of life are presented through Thai food.”  In hope of introducing Thai fine-dining cuisine to the the rest of the world, Royal Osha is also planning to open a new restaurant in New York and in London.

“Each and every single one of the dishes on our menu is special, “ says Khun Supapitch.  “Each and every one has been created with the most passion and care by Gavalin Pitayanukul, chef for research and development, and by Chef Vichit Mukura, who received a Michelin Star in 2020, to ensure that every aspect of the fine-dining experience is achieved.” As the result, Royal Osha has been winner of numerous Best Restaurant awards from culinary platforms all over the world.

To create the ambience that reflects the art and culture of Thailand, dinner guests are greeted the moment they enter the restaurant by a large visual of a scene from the epic Ramayana in which Hanumarn is swallowing Rama’s abode to shield him from his abductor.  The entire restaurant is inspired by the opulence of a traditional Thai palace where the dark interior is constantly juxtaposed with the contrasting splashes of gold.  The traditional mural art of Ramayana makes another appearance on the mezzanine level from where the oversize gold bejeweled chandelier, replica of the head dress worn by traditional Thai dancers, is hung over the main staircase.  The restaurant’s signature chandelier, traditional Thai in conception and Western in execution, provides a stunning contrast to the curves of the modern furniture and the 3D mapping technology behind the moving art displayed atop the ceiling of the restaurant.

“All is to contribute to an impressive and unforgettable dining experience,” says Suphapitch.  “Befitting a special occasion or celebration with special loved ones.”

“Traditional Thai food should be made up of seven flavors in one bite,” Gavalin Pitayanukul, chef for research and developments, points out.  “Sweet, sour, salty, and fatty. The other tastes, bitter, harsh and astringent come from the vegetables and herbs used in Thai cooking, all of which have many medicinal qualities and are very beneficial to one’s health.”

The  medicinal properties of the vegetables and herbs in Thai food often appear in dishes such as Tom Yum. The galangal roots and lemongrass found in Tom Yum are believed to help with stomach gas and to improve the appetite.”

“The major difference between the food at the Royal Osha and at other premium restaurants,” says Gavalin, “is in its preparation. Royal Osha’s in-house Michelin chef is particular about every step of the food-making process. We want Royal Osha to be the restaurant of choice.  When people want to celebrate important occasions in their lives, we want them to think first of Royal Osha.”

“It is very important to us that we get our produce from the best local sources all over Thailand,” she continues. “We also source specialities from each part of the country so that our guests get to taste all of the best local dishes that come from different parts of Thailand.  The a la carte and set menu are seasonal and reflect each of the three seasons in Thailand.  Under the concept “Medicinal foods,”Thai vegetables and herbs with medicinal properties are found in the seasonal set menus to promote inner health and wellness.”

“When you eat, you should go for food that has the balance between bitter, sour and bland tastes to keep your body cool,” says Chef Vichit Mukura, Michelin chef and executive chef and partner of Royal Osha.  The recipes for Royal Osha’s Khao Chae and Khao Yum which have been passed from one generation of chefs to another pay a particular attention when it comes to the selection of raw ingredients. This is how the original taste, presentation and fragrance level are maintained. Only the best jasmine rice is used, polished and cooked to the right consistency.  The accompanying water has to be 8.8 PH in quality as it is the best for the body and has the best reactions with the four fragranced flowers, chomanad, ylang ylang, roses and jasmine used in Khao Chae.  Khao Chae is traditionally served with seven accompanying side dishes.  “Loog Kapi Tod” (fried shrimp paste balls), Prik Yuak Sod Sai (stuffed Asian peppers, “Moo Foy” (shredded sweet pork), “Hom Dang Sod Sai” (stuffed red onions), “Hua Chai Po Pad” (sweet shredded daikon), and intricately carved fresh vegetables that include “Kachai”, Mango, and cucumber.  The chef recommends that “kachai” should be consumed alongside “kapi balls” while mango and cucumber should go with everything else.

“Loog Kapi Tod” is made up of farmed catfish which has been cooked over charcoal, filleted and mixed with different types of herbs.  The mixture is then shaped into tiny balls, dipped in eggs and deep fried until golden in color.

Khao Yum is indigenous to the south of Thailand.  The dish is unique in its combination of many different herbs such as  . . . Which have the . . . . Properties for the body.  The crowning glory of Khao Yum is its dressing which ties all the diverse ingredients together to perfection.

With forty years’ experience of being a chef both in Thailand and abroad, Chef Vichit has taken on the created the challenge of creating the type of Thai menu that shows the rest of the world that Thai food is far from being exclusively street food, but food fraught with tradition, culture and old customs. Once combined with the most carefully-sourced raw material from all over the world, traditional Thai food is undoubtedly among the best in the world.

Please join us in experiencing Royal Osha’s very own Khao Chae Chao Wang and Khao Yum at Royal Osha, Soi Ruam Rudee, Wireless Road everyday from today to 31 May 2021. Lunch 11.00 – 15.00. UNWTO: Vaccinate SIDS to Restart Tourism and Kickstart Recovery

UNWTO: Vaccinate SIDS to Restart Tourism and Kickstart Recovery

Madrid, Spain, March 31, 2021 / TRAVELINDEX / The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is calling for the international community to show solidarity with Small Island Developing States by ensuring they have access to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Read all the latest UNWTO News and Announcements here.

With tourism a leading employer and economic pillar for many of the SIDS, the United Nations specialized agency has stressed that pledges to ensure ‘nobody is left behind’ in the recovery phase of the crisis must be backed up with firm actions. Given the relatively small size of the populations of the SIDS, the cost of mass vaccinations will be minimal compared to the potential benefits of restarting tourism. Moreover, given tourism’s wide value chain and proven ability to create opportunity for all, the impact of rolling out mass vaccinations and allowing tourism to restart, will go beyond economic benefits.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili says: “By sharing vaccines with Small Island Developing States, the international community can help accelerate the restart of tourism in these leading destinations. Due to the size of the populations of the SIDS, the cost of mass vaccinations will be small, but the benefits will be significant. It will restore confidence in visiting SIDS, allowing the many social and economic benefits of tourism to return.”

By sharing vaccines with Small Island Developing States, the international community can help accelerate the restart of tourism in these leading destinations

Secretary-General Pololikashvili made the comments after a meeting with His Excellency Dario Item, Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to Spain, at the UNWTO headquarters in Madrid. One of the 38 SIDS, Antigua and Barbuda is a top tourism destination and is looking to the restart of tourism to protect businesses and jobs and economic growth at both the national and local level. Ambassador Item affirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s application to become a Member State of UNWTO, pending ratification by the upcoming UNWTO General Assembly (October 2021, Marrakesh, Morocco).

According to UNWTO data, prior to the start of the pandemic, tourism accounted for more than 30% of total exports in the majority of the 38 SIDS. In some countries, this proportion has risen as high as 90%. The significance of tourism makes these destinations especially vulnerable to falling tourist numbers, making the timely restart of the sector of vital importance.
